Clear answers for the road ahead.

Here's how Bread Crumbs works during a safety session, and what to expect when you're offline, overdue, or taking a break.

01

Starting a safety session

Choose an activity, set how long you expect to be out, and start the session before you leave. Bread Crumbs is for temporary outings, not continuous everyday tracking.

02

Sharing a guardian link

Use Share Safety Link to send one private browser link to someone you trust. They do not need the Bread Crumbs app or an account.

03

Location permission

Bread Crumbs needs location access during an active safety session to record your last reported breadcrumbs. Choose Precise Location for the most useful guardian view.

04

Why Always Location matters

During an active session, Always Location allows background location updates when the phone is locked or you switch to another app. Bread Crumbs asks for this only so the active safety session can continue its intended job.

05

Notifications

Notifications are used for session changes such as Overtime and resuming after leaving a Snooze area. You can adjust them in iOS Settings.

06

Updates waiting to sync

This means Bread Crumbs has information queued locally and is waiting for a usable connection. The app keeps ordered breadcrumbs and catches up after connectivity returns.

07

Snooze and auto-resume

Snooze is useful when you stop at a hotel, campsite, or other resting place. With Resume if I leave this area enabled, Bread Crumbs can resume normal tracking after you leave the Snooze area.

08

Overtime

Overtime means the session has reached its expected end. You can extend it, end it, or use the incident controls to communicate your status.

09

Ending a session

End stops the active safety session and revokes the associated guardian link. Someone reopening that link will see that the session is no longer active.

10

A guardian link no longer works

A link may have expired, been revoked when the session ended, or been replaced by a newer session. Ask the person who started the session for a current link.

11

Battery and background behavior

Use a charged phone and keep Low Power Mode and location settings in mind. Most importantly: do not swipe Bread Crumbs away from the app switcher during an active session. Force-quitting tells iOS not to relaunch the app for background location until you open Bread Crumbs again.

12

I Need Help

I Need Help records and communicates an incident state through the app’s existing session flow. It does not currently mean Bread Crumbs automatically called emergency services or sent an automatic SMS.
